The World Health Organization (WHO) is investigating a hantavirus outbreak on the Dutch ship Hondius. Experts suggest the virus may have spread through close person-to-person contact. Maria Van Kerkhove of the WHO stated that while the first infection likely happened off-ship, the virus may have passed between people in very close proximity. This includes couples or people sharing cabins.
Deaths and confirmed cases
The virus has already killed three people. These victims include a Dutch couple and a German crew member. The Dutch couple likely caught the virus in Argentina before boarding the ship. A British passenger is currently in a South African hospital.
In total, seven people have likely contracted the virus. This group includes the three deceased, one severely ill patient, and three people with mild symptoms. One person with a light fever has since recovered and no longer shows symptoms.
Emergency medical evacuations
Relief workers are preparing to move two seriously ill patients from the ship. These patients will fly to the Netherlands for treatment. Two specialised planes with medical equipment will handle the transport. The WHO, Dutch authorities, and the ship’s owner, Oceanwide Expeditions, are coordinating this rescue.
The Dutch Ministry of Health is preparing for several outcomes. They are ready to receive the two patients but are also planning for the potential return of a larger group of passengers.
Current status of the ship
There are 149 people from 23 countries still on board. Passengers must stay in their cabins during the crisis. The ship has enough food and water, and crews are currently disinfecting the vessel.
The Hondius is now sailing towards the Canary Islands. The Spanish government previously agreed to let the ship dock for a full investigation and cleaning. However, local authorities in the Canary Islands must still make a final decision. The ship is currently positioned off the coast of Cape Verde.
