Heatwave overwhelms Dutch wildlife shelters

Share

Extreme heat and drought are causing major problems for local wildlife. Dutch hedgehog and bird rescue centres are working at full capacity to save struggling animals. Hedgehogs cannot find enough food because snails and caterpillars crawl deep into the dry ground. Insects also become far less active in high temperatures.

Many hedgehogs arrive at Egelopvang Midden Nederland suffering from severe dehydration and heatstroke. A spokesperson explained that a hedgehog lying flat on its stomach with spread legs is desperately trying to cool down. When these animals become lethargic, they lose their natural survival instincts. Anyone who sees a hedgehog lying in the direct sun should call the dierenambulance immediately.

Warming waters bring disease

Birds are also suffering during this dry spell. Vogelopvang Utrecht reports a 20% increase in bird admissions compared to last year. Manager Kerstin Steinhart noted that young birds dehydrate very quickly. Additionally, warming waters increase the risk of botulisme (botulism), a serious bacterial disease that paralyzes waterfowl.

The Dierenbescherming receives numerous calls about baby birds falling or jumping from their nests to escape the heat. A spokesperson advised that fully feathered young birds usually have parents nearby and do not need rescue. However, featherless chicks on the ground require immediate human intervention.

Protecting pets from heatstroke

The Dierenbescherming also shared safety advice for pet owners. If you need to cool down a hot dog, always start with their paws and belly.

Critical Warning: Never place cold water or ice directly on a dog’s neck. Extreme cold can constrict the major artery in the neck, which can send the dog into shock.

Unlike dogs, cats are generally better at finding their own shady spots to escape the heat.
