KLM denies boarding to passenger before fatal hantavirus infection

Share

A Dutch woman who died from the hantavirus on 26 April had boarded a KLM aircraft in Johannesburg the previous day. KLM confirmed the passenger remained on the plane for only a short time. After assessing her health condition, the crew decided she was unfit for travel and removed her from the flight.

Flight details and health response

The flight departed Johannesburg for Amsterdam at 23:15 on 25 April after the woman disembarked. The RIVM subsequently informed the airline of the situation. The GGD is currently contacting all other passengers who were on board that specific flight to provide guidance.

Symptoms and transmission risk

The incubation period for the hantavirus typically ranges from two to four weeks, though it can manifest within a few days. South African health officials confirmed the Andes variant was detected in patients from the cruise ship Hondius. This specific strain is severe and can spread through close person-to-person contact. Symptoms include high fever, heart failure, and acute respiratory distress.

Advice for travellers

Health authorities advise passengers from the flight to monitor their health closely. Anyone experiencing symptoms should immediately contact their local GP or the GGD.
