More than 1 in 6 people are considering not voting due to lack of trust

A new survey by ANP and Kieskompas suggests that more than one in six people in the Netherlands are thinking about not voting in the upcoming municipal elections because they no longer trust politics. Kieskompas asked over 14,500 respondents to react to the statement: “I’m considering not voting because I’ve lost faith in politics.” Nearly 17 percent agreed, while almost three‑quarters disagreed.

People who voted for the PVV or FVD in the 2025 parliamentary elections are especially likely to consider staying home. Just under one‑third of these voters said they might not vote due to doubts about politics.

Voters for Volt, GroenLinks‑PvdA, and D66 were the least likely to feel this way. More than 90 percent of people who previously supported these parties said that trust does not influence their decision to vote.

At the provincial level, residents of South Holland are most likely to consider abstaining from voting due to low trust. More than one in five respondents in the province agreed with the statement. Limburg and Groningen follow, with over 20 percent of respondents in each province expressing similar concerns.

In contrast, more than three‑quarters of people in Friesland disagreed with the statement, indicating that trust in politics does not affect their intention to vote. In Flevoland, more than 75 percent of respondents reported that trust plays no role in their decision.
