National Heat Plan activated as temperatures rise

Share

The National Heat Plan will take effect across the Netherlands from Thursday due to rising temperatures. The National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) announced this on Wednesday after consultations with the weather service KNMI.

Temperatures are expected to exceed 30 degrees in the coming days. According to the KNMI, Friday and Monday could be particularly hot, with maximum temperatures reaching 35 degrees. The Heat Plan calls on informal caregivers and healthcare workers to be extra alert to the needs of vulnerable groups, including older people and young children. The RIVM advises ensuring easy access to drinking water, encouraging people to go outside early in the morning or later in the evening, and keeping homes cool.

People aged over 75 are among the most vulnerable groups. They have more difficulty regulating their body temperature and often feel thirsty more slowly. People with chronic illnesses, homeless people, and young children are also at higher risk.

The National Heat Plan is activated when the KNMI forecasts temperatures of 27 degrees or higher for four consecutive days. The RIVM warns that heat can cause symptoms such as fatigue, headaches, and concentration problems. More serious health risks include dehydration and heatstroke. The Heat Plan was last in force in mid-August last year.
