Netherlands to fill NATO gaps as US scales down

Share

The Netherlands has pledged to fill some of the shortfalls in European defence created by recent US cancellations of forces on standby for Europe. Defence Minister Dilan Yeşilgöz said the country will provide what NATO asks of it. However, she declined to specify whether that will involve aircraft, naval vessels or other assets.

A few weeks ago, the United States announced it would keep fewer aircraft and warships on immediate standby for Europe. In response, NATO’s top commander asked European members and Canada to step in. Yeşilgöz told reporters at NATO headquarters in Brussels that the Netherlands has accepted that request and “will take our responsibility and stand ready”. Yeşilgöz stressed she would not disclose operational details. “That is always secret”. She also added that, given the threat from a hostile Russia, the Netherlands must be cautious about what information it shares publicly.

NATO sources say the US cancellations include fighter jets earmarked for Europe, Reaper drones and an escorted aircraft carrier. The Netherlands operates F‑35s, frigates and Reaper drones, and could free up some of those assets for NATO duties. Officials note, however, that reallocating equipment would make it harder to carry out other national tasks.

The US reductions take effect immediately, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte clarified on Thursday. It is not yet clear whether the new Dutch commitments can be covered in this immediate timeline.
