The World Health Organization (WHO) has confirmed that no further cases of the hantavirus have been detected aboard the cruise ship m/v Hondius as it makes its way toward the Netherlands. WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus shared the update following direct discussions with the ship’s master, Captain Jan, praising the crew’s commitment to passenger safety and noting that no individuals currently on board are displaying symptoms.
To date, the outbreak has affected ten people: eight cases were confirmed through laboratory results, while two remain suspected. Tragically, three of the patients have died. While Dr Tedros suggested that more infections could potentially emerge in the coming days, he offered reassurance that the general public remains at very low risk from this specific outbreak.
The vessel is scheduled to dock in the Netherlands this Monday. Although the ship is still in transit, its passengers had already disembarked during an earlier stop in the Canary Islands.
