Around 270,000 people have purchased a discounted rail pass over the past month, allowing cheaper train travel during the summer. According to NS, more than 80,000 of those customers did not previously have a subscription.
The Nederland Dal Vrij subscription has been available since mid-June. For €49 per month, travellers can make unlimited journeys during off-peak hours. The subscription can be purchased until 31 July. NS says users have collectively travelled 120 million kilometres so far.
The summer promotion runs until 31 August. Customers must cancel the subscription themselves at the end of the promotion period. Otherwise, it will automatically renew at the standard price of nearly €128 per month.
State Secretary for Public Transport Annet Bertram (CDA) described the interim results as very positive.
“With this temporary product, we are making train travel more attractive, which is important at a time of high fuel prices,” she said in a statement.
Bertram added that transport operators and the government are exploring a nationwide approach to “lower the barrier to using the train, bus, tram, or metro”.
