The Dutch energy company ONE-Dyas has expanded gas production in the North Sea by commissioning a second production well at the N05-A platform. The platform is located about 20 kilometres north of Schiermonnikoog.
The first production well at N05-A has so far produced around 700 million cubic metres of natural gas per year. With the second well now operational, total annual production will rise to approximately 1 billion cubic metres.
A company spokesperson said the second well entered operation on schedule. The decision was not linked to the war in Iran, which has driven up gas prices worldwide. However, the increased output will generate additional income for the Dutch Treasury. “Seventy to 80 per cent of what we earn goes to the Treasury,” the spokesperson said.
Oranje Nassau Energie and the family‑owned company SHV merged their oil and gas activities to form ONE-Dyas in 2019.The spokesperson said the company had already received the required permit for the current expansion. At that time, assessments showed that the risk of earthquakes was negligible.
The spokesperson added that higher domestic gas production could help the Netherlands reduce its dependence on imported gas.
ONE-Dyas is already preparing a further production well at N05-A. The company aims to increase output to 2 billion cubic metres per year. According to ONE-Dyas, this would meet approximately 7 per cent of the Netherlands’ gas demand. The company expects to reach this peak production level in the fourth quarter, prior to the onset of winter.
