A specialist isolation unit at the Radboudumc hospital in Nijmegen is currently treating a patient who may have contracted Ebola. Public health officials from the RIVM and hospital management have both confirmed the admission, though they stressed that the likelihood of an actual infection is currently considered low.
The move to isolate the patient was directed by the National Coordination Centre for Infectious Disease Control to ensure maximum safety. Medical teams are now conducting a series of diagnostic tests to rule out the virus, with the final laboratory results expected to be finalised over the course of the weekend.
Government officials have chosen not to disclose the patient’s current health status or identity, directing all safety and medical inquiries to the relevant health authorities. This precautionary hospitalisation comes on the heels of a recent Red Cross alert highlighting a spike in Ebola cases across the Democratic Republic of Congo and nearby regions.
