Fuel prices in the Netherlands are rising again as higher oil prices feed through to motorists. The increase follows renewed tensions between the United States and Iran, with further pressure coming from developments in the Strait of Hormuz.

State Secretary Silvio Erkens has allocated 13.5 million euros to compensate fishermen for the soaring fuel prices triggered by the conflict in Iran, repurposing funds originally intended for European sustainability projects. While the scheme offers relief for rising operating costs incurred since February, it excludes claims for lost revenue from those who stayed in port to avoid high prices. This emergency measure, funded largely by the EU, arrives alongside separate multi-million euro packages aimed at long-term modernisation and support for shrimp, flatfish, and shellfish fishers as the industry navigates a volatile energy market.

SODA reports a sharp rise in motorists driving away without paying for fuel, linking the trend to higher prices and financial pressure. The organisation says deliberate drive‑offs now form the majority of cases. Fuel prices remain near record levels, although motorists often pay less away from the motorway.

Demand for cheaper second-hand electric cars is increasing sharply in Europe. This is the result of the sharp price increases at the pump caused by the war in the Middle East. Nevertheless, battery life tempers the used-car demand.

Despite sharply rising fuel prices, Dutch motorists are driving more than before. New data shows weekly kilometres and driving days have increased, while many drivers now cross into Belgium or Germany to refuel at lower prices.

Fuel prices climbed again on Saturday, with diesel rising slightly after a sharp increase the day before. Euro95 stayed at the same level, although both fuels remain near record highs. Tensions in the Middle East continue to disrupt shipping routes and energy sites, pushing prices upward.

Petrol and diesel prices continue to rise across the country, with the sharpest increases visible along the highways, where recommended rates are typically applied. Fuel remains noticeably cheaper at stations within cities, prompting many drivers to seek out lower prices there. Meanwhile, motorists are increasingly travelling to border towns in Belgium and Germany, where fuel is often significantly more affordable.

Fuel expert Derk Foolen says the recommended price for Euro95 may rise above €2.50 on Tuesday as the conflict in the Middle East pushes oil prices higher. Tensions around the Strait of Hormuz and attacks on key oil sites are adding pressure to the market. Petrol and diesel prices are now close to record levels.
