Volkswagen recalls electric vehicles over battery fire risk

Share

Volkswagen is recalling nearly 100,000 electric vehicles due to potential issues with their battery modules. Germany’s transport authority, the KBA, announced the move on Tuesday. In the Netherlands, approximately 4,000 cars must return to garages for inspection.

The recall primarily addresses a risk where the high-voltage battery can overheat in exceptional circumstances. A spokesperson for the Dutch importer, Pon, warned that this overheating could lead to a vehicle fire in “extreme cases.” The action globally affects 74,579 cars from Volkswagen’s ID. series and 19,452 Cupra Born models.

Affected Models and Production Dates

The recall impacts a specific range of vehicles built on the MEB electric platform. If your car was manufactured during the following windows, it may be included:

  • Volkswagen ID.3, ID.4, ID.5, ID. Buzz, and ID. Buzz Cargo: Produced between 24 June 2023 and 23 August 2024.
  • Cupra Born: Produced between 7 February 2022 and 21 April 2024.

According to the spokesperson, certain cars from these periods may contain battery modules that do not fully meet technical specifications. Affected drivers might notice a yellow warning light or a significant reduction in driving range. Currently, there are no known instances of injuries resulting from these defects.

Next Steps for Owners

Volkswagen has already begun contacting customers to arrange precautionary checks. Technicians will perform a software update and analyse individual modules within the high-voltage battery. If they identify a faulty module during this analysis, they will replace it immediately at no cost to the owner.

How to check your vehicle:

In the Netherlands, you can check if your vehicle is affected by entering your number plate on the RDW (OVI) website or by using the official Volkswagen/Cupra recall check tools. You will need your 17-digit Vehicle Identification Number (VIN), which is typically found at the base of the windscreen or on your registration documents.
