VPRO will cut 58 jobs as part of a reorganisation driven by budget reductions. The changes affect teams in media, production, and several support departments. The broadcaster will also create fourteen new roles. Managers informed employees on Monday.
General director Zakia Guernina calls the announcement “a black day in the hundred‑year history” of VPRO. “The budget cuts force us to say goodbye to colleagues who, day in and day out, dedicate themselves, heart and soul, to bringing stories to the Dutch public,” she says. “The VPRO will continue to distinguish itself with the power of independent journalism, stories, and imagination. We believe that an open, critical, and just society does not arise on its own, but must be created, nurtured, and protected.”
In December, VPRO warned that the cuts would lead to the loss of 35 to 45 jobs. It also announced that several programmes would end. For example, the broadcaster will not produce a new season of Zomergasten after the upcoming series.
