Owners of electric vehicles who charge through their homeowners’ association (VvE) may be paying VAT twice on the same electricity. According to Vereniging Eigen Huis (VEH), this results in double taxation of the power used for charging. The organisation has asked State Secretary Eelco Eerenberg of Finance to propose a solution. It argues that the current situation is unfair and that existing alternatives are impractical.
Many apartment owners share electricity through their VvE to power facilities such as lighting, lifts and, increasingly, electric vehicle charging stations. VAT is already paid when the VvE purchases electricity from its supplier. However, VAT is charged again through the charging station operator when residents use the charging point.
According to VEH, this can cost a motorist up to €190 a year in additional VAT if they rely solely on a VvE charging station.
“This clashes with government policy, which is specifically aimed at encouraging electric driving and home charging. Moreover, apartment owners are disadvantaged by this compared with homeowners who have their own charging point,” VEH said in a press release.
The organisation said the issue is becoming more pressing as more people switch to electric vehicles. VEH based its findings on its own surveys of apartment owners. The organisation found that 60 per cent expect to drive an electric vehicle within the next five years.
