Autumn’s first local frost hits the Netherlands

Share

Temperatures dropped below freezing in the southern Netherlands overnight on Thursday, marking the autumn’s first local frost. According to Weeronline, sub-zero conditions were recorded across parts of Brabant, Limburg, and Zeeland. This year’s first frost arrived slightly later than usual; between 1996 and 2025, the average date was around 25 October.

This marks the first frost recorded in the country since 15 May. Temperatures fell to -0.3°C in Eindhoven and -0.5°C in Deelen at standard observation height (1.5 metres)—the official threshold required to register an official frost day.

Ground frost had already been recorded much earlier in the season, on 25 September, when temperatures at grass level in Twente dropped to -0.4°C. However, an official nationwide frost day has not yet been declared, as that requires freezing temperatures at the KNMI measuring station in De Bilt, where overnight temperatures hovered just above freezing at 0.8°C.
