Cracks force immediate lane closures on key A15 motorway bridge

Rijkswaterstaat has detected structural cracks in a main girder of the western Suurhoff Bridge, forcing immediate lane closures on the A15 heading toward Maasvlakte. To reduce structural load per direct, authorities closed both regular lanes, diverting all traffic onto the hard shoulder.

Rijkswaterstaat prepares traffic diversion to adjacent bridge

The affected bridge crosses the Hartelkanaal in the Rotterdam port area. Rijkswaterstaat is making preparations to shift two-way traffic onto the adjacent eastern Suurhoff Bridge, which opened five years ago. However, officials have not yet specified how long these logistical adjustments will take.

Heavy freight traffic faces 30-minute delays

Approximately 36,500 vehicles cross the Suurhoff Bridges daily, including 15,500 heavy trucks. Drivers face estimated travel delays of 20 to 30 minutes, though shipping traffic along the canal remains unaffected.

Infrastructure strain highlights need for widespread renovation

The 1974 western Suurhoff Bridge was already under heightened surveillance. This emergency closure follows recent weight restrictions on the Merwedebrug along the A27 and urgent repairs on the Hardenbergerbrug along the A28. Rijkswaterstaat stated that the new cracks underscore the urgent need for large-scale infrastructure renovations currently managed by Minister Vincent Karremans and State Secretary Annet Bertram.
