Dutch semiconductor stocks dragged the AEX into negative territory on Friday morning as a wave of weak Big Tech earnings rattled investor confidence. Chip equipment makers ASMI, Besi, and ASML led the downturn following dismal reports from Intel and Amazon—building on the market anxiety sparked a day earlier when Google parent Alphabet’s poor figures hammered AI sentiment.
Crucially for supplier ASML, Intel flagged a cooling PC market and issued a grim outlook, sending its stock towards a staggering 23 per cent drop in pre-market US trading. With Amazon also poised for a sharp decline and Alphabet having just shed roughly half a trillion in market value during Thursday’s session, the broader technology sector remains under severe strain.
The pressure was felt immediately in Amsterdam, where the flagship index dipped 0.1 per cent to 1,140.62 shortly after the opening bell, with the chip trio anchoring the bottom of the table on losses of up to 4.5 per cent.
