Two buses carrying dozens of asylum seekers returned to Ter Apel at 8:40am on Sunday, an ANP reporter saw. The group had spent the night at the Hanzeplaza conference centre in Groningen. They are now waiting again for a place inside the registration centre. According to a Red Cross spokesperson, about 105 people are involved.
A night shelter with 175 beds was set up at the conference centre on Saturday afternoon. It will remain available until Monday. Groningen mayor Roelien Kamminga received a request for the shelter from asylum minister Bart van den Brink.
Because of crowding at the registration centre in Ter Apel, not everyone has been allowed in since Wednesday. The most vulnerable asylum seekers are given priority. People who could not enter the reception centre were taken on earlier nights to the nearby municipalities of Gieten and Stadskanaal.
