Dutch writer Frida Vogels has died at the age of 96. Her publisher, Van Oorschot, announced on Tuesday that she passed away on Monday in Bologna, Italy, where she had lived since the 1950s.
Vogels was best known for her book series De harde kern. In 1994, she won the Libris Literature Prize for Met zijn drieën, the second volume in the series. However, the author, whom her publisher described as “completely publicity-shy”, chose not to accept the award in person.
Van Oorschot began publishing Vogels’ diaries in 2005. Eleven volumes were released, although the series was originally planned to contain sixteen. In 2014, Vogels decided that none of her remaining diaries would be published.
In addition to her own writing, Vogels translated works by Italian authors, including Salvatore Satta, Primo Levi and Cesare Pavese.
Her autobiographical book In den vreemde was published in 2024. Van Oorschot described the work as a “worthy cornerstone of her oeuvre”.
