Publishers DPG Media and Mediahuis are appealing against fines from the Healthcare and Youth Care Inspectorate. The health watchdog penalised Algemeen Dagblad, de Volkskrant, De Telegraaf, and NRC for reporting on weight loss drugs Ozempic, Wegovy, and Mounjaro.
Health regulator bans public promotion
The inspectorate claims the newspapers violated the Dutch Medicines Act by publishing articles that promoted prescription drugs. Dutch law strictly bans direct advertising of prescription medicines to the public. Regulators argue that Ozempic holds approval in the Netherlands solely as a diabetes treatment. They state that news outlets must not present it as a general slimming aid.
Het Financieele Dagblad revealed that regulators fined DPG Media €51,000 for two articles in de Volkskrant and AD. One penalised story covered scientific research from the journal Nature. The piece discussed the health benefits and potential side effects of weight loss drugs.
Journalists warn against censorship
The penalties have sparked fierce criticism across the media sector. Editors strongly condemn the decision and argue that the ban restricts vital scientific reporting.
The Dutch Association of Journalists plans an urgent meeting with health regulators. General Secretary Thomas Bruning warns that heavy fines create a chilling effect. He cautions that these penalties force journalists to self-censor when reporting on major medical developments.
