Dutch organizations threaten Meta with lawsuit over privacy-violating AI glasses

Share

Dutch advocacy organizations have ordered tech giant Meta to immediately stop selling its AI-equipped camera glasses in the Netherlands. If Meta fails to halt sales within two weeks, the groups plan to launch summary legal proceedings against the parent company of Facebook and Instagram. Advocacy groups The Firewall and Offlimits argue that the device enables secret recording, driving severe privacy violations and online harassment.

Victims report secret filming through Meta smart glasses

Offlimits, an organization combating online abuse, confirmed receiving multiple reports from victims secretly recorded by the device.

“To prevent more victims, we want to ensure these videos cannot be filmed in the first place,” stated Robbert Hoving, Executive Director of Offlimits. “Everyone, including the tech bros, bears a responsibility to keep the internet safe and free.”

Legal action alleges European privacy law violations

The Firewall asserts that Meta processes covertly filmed footage directly within its internal AI systems. By processing image data of individuals who never consented to being recorded, the tech company directly violates European privacy laws (GDPR). The advocacy groups demand an immediate sales ban to protect public privacy across the Netherlands.
