Education cuts loom following disappointing social deal

The cabinet plans to cover up to 49 per cent of the funding needed for social security measures by cutting education spending.

The proposed multi-billion euro reductions linked to social security have been put on hold while the cabinet seeks an agreement with trade unions and employers. If those talks do not deliver enough savings, the remaining amount will be taken from other ministries.

Finance Minister Eelco Heinen sent a table to the House of Representatives on Wednesday. According to the figures, education would bear the largest share of the cuts. By 2029, education would account for 39 per cent of the required savings.

More than €300 million must be found in 2029. Of that total, 9 per cent would come from the Climate Fund, 8 per cent from public housing, and 7 per cent from agriculture.

Almost all ministries would face reduced budgets between 2029 and 2031. The savings amount to €1.4 billion in 2030 and €2.4 billion in 2031. The King, Defence and the Infrastructure Fund would be exempt from the cuts.
