A major light installation called the Lichtring (light ring) is set to become a new landmark for Eindhoven as part of the redevelopment of the Karel de Grotelaan and Ring intersection. The project is part of the HOV4 (Higher Public Transport 4) initiative, which will see the current roundabout replaced by an underpass.
The light artwork will be installed above the new sunken intersection and is expected to be completed by 2030. Designed by a team led by IPV Delft, the installation will work in harmony with the tunnel’s lighting elements. It follows other famous local light installations such as the Lichtnaald (light needle) and De Zwerm (the swarm).
The Municipality of Eindhoven is now inviting local residents to help shape the green spaces surrounding the project. The goal is to make the area more attractive and safer while incorporating climate-adaptive features like water storage.
“The new intersection (Lichtring) will help create a safe, recognisable, and pleasant place for everyone moving through Eindhoven,” said Alderperson Robert Strijk. “Equally important is the greenery and the design of the surrounding public space. We hope many residents will participate so we can create an environment that is future-proof and inviting.”
A public meeting will be held on Wednesday, 25 March at café (‘ t Rozenknopje ) on Hoogstraat. Two identical sessions will take place from 18:30 to 19:30 and 19:30 to 20:30. These sessions will focus specifically on landscaping and green design, as the traffic management plans have already been finalised. Later this year, the public will also be invited to give feedback on how the installation’s light should interact with the neighbourhood.
Interested parties can register for the meeting until 18 March via the official website at openeindhoven.nl/lichtring.
