Student team Solar Team Eindhoven, based at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e), has presented Stella Juva, the world’s first ambulance powered entirely by solar energy. A multidisciplinary group of 23 students designed and built the innovative vehicle to make essential medical care accessible to people living in remote regions. Poor road infrastructure and a total lack of electricity or fuel supplies frequently limit access to healthcare in these off-grid locations. Inspired by the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals, the project aims to broaden global healthcare access while demonstrating how technological innovation and social impact can merge.
Strategic partnership targets global health equity
The student team collaborated closely with international healthcare organizations, including Amref Health Africa, to ensure the design meets practical field demands. Amref Health Africa has worked for nearly 70 years to improve healthcare access across Africa, where health workers often travel vast distances under harsh conditions. Reliable energy is critical in these isolated regions to keep vaccines properly cooled, run diagnostic equipment, and power essential tools. Representatives from Amref emphasized that quality healthcare should never depend on proximity to electrical power grids or fuel stations, praising the student team for creating a viable technological solution.
Specialized mobile clinic breaks away from traditional design
Unlike traditional emergency ambulances that focus primarily on transporting sick or injured patients to hospitals, Stella Juva functions as a fully equipped mobile treatment facility. The solar ambulance brings medical professionals directly to patients in isolated communities. Onboard systems allow health workers to perform blood tests, administer vital vaccinations, conduct pregnancy ultrasounds, and screen for severe conditions like malaria and tuberculosis. Early detection allows local medical teams to treat common illnesses before they become life-threatening.
Advanced solar technology eliminates need for charging infrastructure
Stella Juva generates all its operational power using integrated solar panels mounted across its roof. This solar setup charges internal batteries that power both the electric drivetrain and medical equipment. On a single sunny day, the solar ambulance achieves an estimated driving range of 715 kilometres, ensuring that medical teams can operate indefinitely without relying on local power grids or fuel stations.
Field testing in Kenya to prove real-world viability
Solar Team Eindhoven will travel to Kenya in August to subject Stella Juva to rigorous field trials. The team plans to drive hundreds of kilometres entirely on solar power across challenging African terrain while simulating complex healthcare scenarios, such as tuberculosis screening operations. Solar Team Eindhoven has a rich history of pioneering sustainable transport, having previously won four consecutive titles at the World Solar Challenge in Australia, alongside creating a solar campervan in 2021 and an off-road solar vehicle in 2023.
