EU moves to ban AI‑generated explicit images

Share

EU member states and the European Parliament reached a provisional agreement on Thursday on updates to the bloc’s AI regulation. One of the key outcomes is a ban on AI systems that generate sexually explicit images without consent, a measure introduced after public concern over such images produced by Grok, Elon Musk’s AI chatbot.

After nine hours of talks, EU lawmakers also decided to delay the rollout of several parts of the Artificial Intelligence Act. The law officially entered into force in August 2024. With the act, the commission aims to streamline the growing set of digital rules and reduce administrative overlap.

Companies had repeatedly warned that overlapping regulations and bureaucratic hurdles were making it harder for European firms to compete with American and Asian tech rivals. The agreement still requires formal approval, but negotiators say the political consensus is in place.
