Farmers who drove their tractors on the A31 in northern Friesland on Monday evening will be fined, police have said. Agricultural vehicles are not allowed on motorways.
The farmers entered the motorway after a protest in Sexbierum against the cabinet’s nitrogen policy.
Police said some tractor licence plates had been covered with tape. Officers are still trying to identify the owners of those vehicles. Covering licence plates is not permitted.
Licence plates have also been obscured during other farmers’ protests this year. On 30 July, around 80 tractors blocked the A35 near Almelo. Police were unable to issue fines afterwards because all licence plates had been covered.
On Tuesday morning, protesting farmers briefly blocked the N35 between Nijverdal and Wierden in Overijssel. Police did not intervene, and the farmers left after more than two hours.
According to a police spokesperson, no action was taken because the blockade did not create a dangerous situation and was not accompanied by violence or vandalism.
No fines were issued, including to farmers who had removed the licence plates from their tractors. “Given the orderly course of the demonstration, this was not a priority for us. This is also the approach agreed upon by the Public Prosecution Service, municipalities, and the police,” the spokesperson said.
