Fire service strengthens cooperation with farmers as wildfire risk rises

Fire Service Netherlands will work more closely with farmers as drought and high temperatures increase the risk of wildfires. The organisation and trade association LTO Noord are developing a broader approach that goes beyond firefighting.

“We need everyone and all parties. Not only when the fire breaks out, but especially in the preparation,” says Jelmer Dam, National Specialist Coordinator for Wildfire Management at Fire Service Netherlands.

LTO Noord says farmers can help because they manage the landscape daily. They know the terrain well and have vehicles and equipment that can reach difficult areas.

The fire service also wants to cooperate during incidents. This already happens in Ommen, Overijssel, where farmers support crews with water transport and vehicles.

In the coming period, the organisations will explore how they can further shape the collaboration.
