The FNV trade union plans a series of actions during the first two weeks of September, including what is expected to be a 24-hour railway strike. FNV chair Hans Spekman announced the plans on the WNL talk show Goedenavond Nederland. He also said that actions will take place within the government on 8 September.
The union is protesting against the cabinet’s plans to cut social security. In June, a nationwide public transport strike took place, but it lasted only one morning.
Spekman said the upcoming actions will be on a larger scale. Alongside protests involving the railways and government services, demonstrations are also planned at ports, hospitals and care homes. However, the actions at hospitals and care homes will not involve strikes, he said.
According to Spekman, workers do not go on strike for pleasure. He argued that the cabinet is not listening and has shown no willingness to change its position.
Spekman added that no exact date has yet been set for the railway strike.
