The Fraudehelpdesk has issued a warning regarding scam emails posing as official communications from iDEAL WeroNL. Recipients have recently reported receiving fraudulent messages claiming they are owed a cash refund and must verify their identity to collect it.
Scam exploits European transition
The phishing email contains a malicious link and insists recipients complete verification within the week to receive money on the next working day. Scammers are exploiting the upcoming transition of the iDEAL payment platform to the new European digital wallet, Wero. The fake message falsely claims that an administrative audit revealed an outstanding refund from Worldpay B.V.
iDEAL issues safety warning
iDEAL confirmed that multiple phishing campaigns are currently exploiting the platform’s migration. The payment provider stressed that it never asks customers via email to confirm personal details, start verifications, or activate software. Officials urge recipients to ignore links, avoid sharing data, delete the messages, and notify their bank.
Sharp rise in phishing reports
The Fraudehelpdesk reported a dramatic surge in submitted scam emails over recent months. Daily reports grew from four or five in January to between 70 and 80 by June, peaking at nearly 100 per day in July. Although numbers dipped slightly in August, two victims have already reported financial losses.
