Hans Anders has indefinitely suspended sales of Meta’s AI-powered smart glasses, citing ongoing public and political debate over how the technology should be used. Meta smart glasses were sold only in limited numbers and attracted modest customer interest. The Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses have a starting price of €419.
Designed to resemble ordinary eyewear, the glasses include built-in AI features. This allows users to take photos and videos hands-free, make calls, and listen to music. A small light on the front of the frames indicates a recording in progress.
The move comes as several Dutch organisations prepare potential legal action against Meta. The main argument is that the glasses make it easier to secretly record people, increasing the risk of privacy violations and inappropriate behaviour. The House of Representatives has also called for a more explicit ban on the use of the so-called “peeping glasses”.
The optical retailer said it has removed the glasses from both its stores and online shop. The specsmaker awaits further discussion and possible policy decisions regarding smart glasses. The company will later decide whether the products will return to its assortment and under what conditions.
