Prime Minister Rob Jetten has called for stronger cooperation between the Netherlands and Belgium on electricity production. Speaking at the opening of the Brabo III high-voltage substation in Antwerp, he said both countries should work more closely on hydrogen, nuclear power and wind energy.
Belgian grid operator Elia built the Brabo III substation. It is designed to strengthen the electricity network around Antwerp and make energy exchange between Belgium and the Netherlands easier.
Jetten attended the opening alongside Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever. He said the project should be seen as a foundation for further collaboration.
“As far as I am concerned, the milestone we are reaching today is not an endpoint. This project shows what we can achieve when we join forces. Let us certainly continue to do so,” the D66 Prime Minister said.
Jetten also stressed the growing importance of energy security. “Both our countries and the whole of Europe need to take much greater responsibility for their own energy. In recent years, this has also rapidly become a security issue,” he said.
“That is perhaps not how Brabo III started as a project, but in today’s world, it is certainly an important element.”
