Prime Minister Rob Jetten has downplayed Donald Trump’s threat to withdraw all American troops from Europe if the European Union does not support his plan to take control of Greenland.
Speaking at the NATO summit in Ankara, Jetten said Europe is capable of defending itself. “We have shown in recent months that we are well capable of defending this continent ourselves,” he said. He added that cooperation with the United States remains important. “But of course, with the help of the Americans.”
Jetten also repeated his view that Europe has significantly increased its contribution to NATO in recent years.
“We have tripled our defence spending. Other countries have also increased it significantly. And in recent days, we have seen many deals on military cooperation between European allies,” he said.
Trump has repeatedly suggested that the United States could leave NATO. However, Jetten argued that the alliance continues to offer clear benefits to Washington, especially as European members increase their defence commitments.
“We have many capabilities that are also crucial for the United States,” he said. “And companies from America and Europe are working more closely together to strengthen the defence industry. So it is in the interest of the United States to be part of this strengthened NATO alliance.”
