The KNMI has issued a yellow weather warning for the entire Netherlands due to severe thunderstorms. The warning initially covered only the coastal provinces and the Wadden Islands.
According to the KNMI, thunderstorms will first develop along the coast before moving further inland. Conditions are expected to become gradually drier on Monday evening.
The storms may bring heavy rainfall in a short period, hail, and wind gusts of up to 70 kilometres per hour. Localised downpours could produce between 20 and 30 millimetres of rain.
A separate warning has also been issued for heavy rainfall in North Holland. In some areas, between 50 and 70 millimetres of rain could fall within 12 to 24 hours.
The severe weather could significantly affect traffic. Heavy rainfall can lead to aquaplaning, which occurs when a thin layer of water builds up between a vehicle’s tyres and the road surface and cannot drain away quickly enough. This can cause the tyres to temporarily lose contact with the road, reducing grip and increasing the risk of losing control of the vehicle.
