Ksa warns of betting and advertising risks

Share

The Dutch Gaming Authority (Ksa) expects an increase in sports betting during the upcoming World Cup, accompanied by a rise in advertising from gambling providers. According to a spokesperson, this trend is not necessarily negative in itself, but major tournaments have a strong appeal to young adults. A group that the regulator considers more vulnerable to gambling addiction. For this reason, the Ksa is running a campaign to highlight the risks.

Supervision of gambling providers will also be tightened. Advertisements may not target young adults and may not feature role models. The Ksa can intervene immediately, issuing warnings or imposing fines when necessary.

Sports betting typically rises during major football events such as the European Championship and the World Cup. This year’s tournament, hosted in the United States, Canada, and Mexico, begins on Thursday evening.

The regulator emphasises that participating in World Cup prediction pools is not considered high‑risk. The addictive potential of a game of chance depends partly on the time between placing a bet and receiving winnings. Because pools are completed in advance and results are only known after the tournament ends, they fall into a lower‑risk category.
