More people in the Netherlands continue working after reaching the state pension age. In the second quarter of this year, 152,000 employees were above the retirement age, up from 96,000 at the beginning of 2018, according to Statistics Netherlands (CBS).

The share of employees above the state pension age rose from 1.2 per cent to 1.7 per cent during this period.

Men are more likely than women to continue working. In the second quarter, 2.3 per cent of male employees were above the state pension age, compared with 1.1 per cent of female employees.

People are most likely to continue working after retirement age in the real estate rental and trading sector. They account for 4.3 per cent of employees in this sector. The government sector has the smallest share, at 0.6 per cent.

People also continue to change careers after reaching the state pension age. In the second quarter, nearly 21,000 employees above that age moved to a different sector.

Among employees who leave their jobs after reaching the state pension age, 9 per cent go on to work in another sector. Most, however, retire.
