The province of Noord-Holland plans to award an additional sponsorship grant of 79,500 euros to the Liberation Day festival in Haarlem for 2027. Held annually on 5 May in the Haarlemmerhout city park, Bevrijdingspop requested the extra funding after warning it could not stage next year’s event without financial aid. Organisers have submitted a similar request for extra support to the municipality of Haarlem.
Guaranteeing Free Access
Provincial officials emphasized the importance of preserving the event and keeping it free for visitors. Noord-Holland already provides a baseline sponsorship contribution of 100,000 euros. Alongside the extra grant, the province stands ready to provide up to 100,000 euros in deficit coverage to absorb potential operating losses after the 2027 edition.
Broader Financial Strain
The board of Bevrijdingspop will make a final decision in November on whether the 2027 festival will proceed. Liberation Day festivals operate across every Dutch province, though many have faced severe financial strain in recent years. In response to widespread budget shortfalls, the central government decided in 2025 to provide structural state funding to help support the events nationwide.
