The number of company bankruptcies in the Netherlands fell by 4 per cent compared to June last year. Statistics Netherlands (CBS) reports that 302 companies went bankrupt last month. This is 12 fewer than a year ago, but 15 more than in May.
To show a clearer trend, the CBS tracks the bankruptcy rate per 100,000 companies. In June, this rate dropped to 8.1, down from 8.6 a year earlier. This metric makes it easier to compare different industries because the total number of businesses changes over time.
The transport and storage sector was hit hardest, with its bankruptcy rate jumping from 12.1 to 39.2 per 100,000 firms within a year. The manufacturing sector followed with the second-highest rate at 32.7.
Looking at the long-term trend since 2015, the bankruptcy rate peaked at 24.8 in March 2015 and hit a record low of 3.4 in August 2021. The rate then rose until early 2024, stayed steady through that autumn, and has been falling slightly since then.
