Paul Rosenmöller will leave politics next May when a new Senate is elected. The 70-year-old currently serves as parliamentary group leader in the Senate for PRO, the party formed from GroenLinks and the PvdA.
“The moment has come to hand over the baton. At least, in nine months,” Rosenmöller said in a statement. He has been a member of the Senate since 2019 and has led the parliamentary group for GroenLinks, GroenLinks-PvdA and now PRO.
Rosenmöller said he intends to remain active in public life. “I am still full of energy and would like to stay at the heart of society. But politically, I am taking a step back.”
He began his career in the Port of Rotterdam and later worked for the trade union federation FNV. In 1989, he entered the House of Representatives, where he helped build GroenLinks and became the party’s leader five years later.
Rosenmöller left the House of Representatives in 2003. He subsequently worked as a programme maker for IKON and served as chair of the VO-raad, the organisation representing secondary education. He also sat on the board of pension fund ABP.
PRO leader Jesse Klaver praised Rosenmöller’s contribution to Dutch politics. “Paul Rosenmöller has left his mark on Dutch politics and made a significant contribution to first GroenLinks and later to the creation of Progressief Nederland,” Klaver said.
He described Rosenmöller as “driven, authoritative and always focused on results”.
