The US government has awarded health technology firm Philips nearly 34 million dollars to research AI-driven robotics for stroke treatment. The Dutch company is exploring technology that allows surgeons to control operating rooms remotely. A company spokesperson explained that doctors will operate from a specialized cockpit equipped with joysticks and multiple monitors.
Remote care offers rapid intervention
This announcement marks the first time Philips has publicly detailed its stroke robotics program. Remote robotic care offers major clinical advantages during medical emergencies. Patients with blood clots require immediate specialist intervention to remove the blockage, yet remote regions often lack qualified surgeons. Remote technology enables doctors to treat patients rapidly regardless of location.
Long-term testing and market targets
Philips is collaborating on the project with Johns Hopkins University and Boston University. The research remains in its early stages, meaning commercial application is still years away. Philips plans to launch the technology in the United States first before expanding into European and Dutch markets.
Several technology companies are currently developing remote surgical systems. However, Philips holds a distinct advantage through its Azurion image-guided therapy platform, which already operates in hospitals worldwide. Engineers plan to integrate the new robotic systems directly into existing Azurion equipment.
Project receives public funding boost
Philips frequently receives major research grants. The Dutch government recently allocated 100 million euros to the broader medical technology sector, with a portion funding this robotics initiative alongside the new American grant.
