ZEVENAAR (ANP) – The police have arrested several climate activists from Extinction Rebellion who tried to enter the road at the entrances to the A12 near Zevenaar (Gelderland), an ANP reporter sees. It is not clear exactly how many demonstrators are involved.
Dozens of activists tried to enter the A12 via the ramp just before noon, but the police intervened. Other demonstrators managed to block the highway moments later. No arrests have been made there so far. The Mobile Unit is on site, the reporter sees.
The road is close towards the German border. The road is still open in the direction of Arnhem. The activists receive a lot of comments from motorists who drive there.
The municipality of Zevenaar could not be reached. The climate action group had not announced in advance exactly where on the A12 they would enter the road. XR has blocked Dutch highways dozens of times to draw attention to the climate and to call on the government to stop subsidising fossil fuels. The blockages often take place near The Hague or Utrecht.
