The annual Refugee Night walking event raised a record €2.1 million, according to organiser Stichting Vluchteling. Earlier, the charity announced a record 10,000 participants for the sponsored walk. This covers distances ranging from 10 to 50 kilometres. Walkers also faced challenging weather conditions along the route.

Organisers cancelled the 40-kilometre route between Tilburg and ‘s-Hertogenbosch because of cold weather and heavy rain.

Director Benoit De Gryse said many participants were able to switch to alternative routes at the last moment. This allows them to continue taking part. Later during the night from Saturday to Sunday, the route between Nijmegen and Arnhem was partially cancelled due to persistent rain and thunderstorms.

The funds raised during the event will support emergency aid projects in Lebanon, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Somalia, Afghanistan, Burkina Faso and Ukraine.
