Restaurant and grocery prices set to rise

The FoodService Institute Netherlands (FSIN) expects restaurant and cafe prices in the Netherlands to rise by 4.5 percent in 2027. Across the wider food sector, including supermarkets and speciality stores, prices are forecast to increase by 3.5 percent.

According to FSIN, turnover growth in the Dutch hospitality sector this year has been driven entirely by higher prices. This is mainly due to declining customer visits to restaurants and cafes. While revenue is increasing, consumers are dining out less frequently as they become more cautious about spending. FSIN director Patrick Bramer expects the market to remain challenging next year. He said consumers have not stopped spending, but are making more deliberate choices.

That trend is becoming increasingly visible across the sector. Supermarket shoppers are seeking out discounts and lower-cost alternatives, while restaurant customers are thinking more carefully about whether a meal out offers good value for money.

Despite growing consumer caution, total revenue across the Dutch food and hospitality sector is expected to continue rising, largely as a result of higher prices rather than stronger demand.
