Rotterdam authorities consult Feyenoord following stadium pyrotechnics incident

The Rotterdam triangular consultation group will hold talks with Feyenoord following a pyrotechnics incident during Tuesday evening’s match against Internazionale. The spokesman for Mayor Carola Schouten confirmed the upcoming discussions after fireworks descended onto the pitch and stadium roof, seemingly launched from outside De Kuip. Referee officials briefly interrupted the match to clear the playing area.

Police arrested two individuals near the stadium shortly after the incident on suspicion of possessing pyrotechnics. Law enforcement officers are investigating the facts, circumstances, and precise cause of the disruption. Multiple media outlets report that the projectiles were marine signal flares, which are freely available at watersport shops for maritime emergencies. Police have not yet officially confirmed the exact nature of the pyrotechnics used.

Potential UEFA Penalties

Rotterdam authorities and key emergency services will meet with Feyenoord representatives to discuss preventive measures for future matches. The football club holds direct responsibility only for operations inside the stadium perimeter. However, European football governing body UEFA has previously penalised Feyenoord for fan-led pyrotechnics and stadium misconduct. If UEFA imposes new sanctions over the incident, the club risks substantial financial fines and partial stadium closures for upcoming home matches.
