The Port of Rotterdam is once again exporting more empty containers, and that is a worrying trend, said CEO Boudewijn Siemons during the presentation of the half-year figures. According to him, more empty containers are being shipped back to Asia to return filled. “That shows our dependency is increasing”, Siemons remarked.
The number of containers handled at the port fell slightly in the first half of the year compared to the same period last year. Measured by weight, the decline was nearly 3 percent. Imports of containers from Asia rose by 8 percent.
“Economically, it is quite uncomfortable when you import more and more and produce less and less”, Siemons added. He emphasised that complete independence is not the goal. “Being dependent on each other is fine, but that mutual dependence is currently lacking”.
