Cleaners at Schiphol Airport went on strike on Wednesday in protest over the new collective labour agreement, the FNV trade union reported. The union says the agreement reduces sick pay and could have significant financial consequences for cleaners. The strike is not expected to cause delays for travellers.
Around 350 cleaners took part in the action, according to FNV. They gathered at the airport between 12:15 p.m. and 2:15 p.m.
Under the new agreement, employees who have worked in the cleaning sector for less than six years will no longer receive their full wages if they fall ill.
“We call on Schiphol, as one of the largest clients, to support our demands and exert pressure on the cleaning companies,” said Herrie Hoogenboom, a board member of FNV Cleaning.
The strike at Schiphol is part of a broader series of actions by cleaners after they rejected the proposed collective labour agreement. More than 80 per cent of FNV members voted against the negotiated deal.
