A serious accident involving multiple vehicles has occurred on the A12 motorway close to the German border. According to the East Netherlands police, several people have been injured. The exact number of victims as well as the severity of their injuries are not yet known.
Shortly before the crash, the ANWB reported a 10‑minute traffic jam on the A12 towards Germany due to border controls. Following the accident, the road in that direction has been completely closed, and traffic is being diverted.
The incident comes amid ongoing criticism of the German border checks. Earlier this year, Hubert Bruls, mayor of Nijmegen, argued that the controls cause accidents, delays, and nuisance, and are at odds with European rules. “The accidents are extraordinarily tragic. It makes the border controls even more bitter”, he added.
Shortly before that interview, a collision involving seven cars on the same highway resulted in the death of a 66‑year‑old man.
