Six activists who caused a traffic jam on part of the A12 motorway on Saturday by blocking the road with cars are still in custody. Police questioned them on Sunday. A spokesperson said police expect to release them later in the day.

The suspects include two men aged 40 and 44 from Utrecht, along with a 46-year-old man from Ouderkerk aan de Amstel and a 59-year-old man from Tilburg. The group also includes a 67-year-old man from Almelo and a 79-year-old man from IJsselstein. Police said on Saturday that they must report to the Central Office for Motor Vehicle Driver Testing (CBR) for an “educational measure”. It is not yet clear whether they will face further penalties.

During the protest on the A12 near De Meern, close to Utrecht, police detained between 400 and 450 demonstrators on Saturday. The police took them away and later released them. The protest, organised by Extinction Rebellion (XR) and several other groups, was aimed at subsidies for fossil fuels.
