Electronics and entertainment giant Sony will stop manufacturing physical games for the PlayStation starting in January 2028. Sid Shuman, Senior Director of Content Communications, announced the definitive timeline on the official PlayStation blog. The dramatic shift applies globally to all new game releases. This policy covers both Sony’s first-party titles and all third-party games from outside publishers. After the deadline, players can only buy new games digitally through the PlayStation Store and traditional retail networks.
Market forces and changing consumer habits drove the decision. Sony Interactive Entertainment stated that the change represents a natural evolution for the business. Recent market data shows that digital downloads already account for nearly 80% of all full-game sales on PlayStation consoles. In contrast, physical game distribution shrunk to a tiny sliver of overall platform revenue over the past year. The transition also reflects recent hardware developments. The recent launch of the disc-free PlayStation 5 Pro signaled the company’s clear direction toward a digital ecosystem.
Impact on retailers and collectors
The new policy will alter how physical stores sell video games. Retailers will transition from stacking physical disc boxes to selling digital game-key cards or download codes. PlayStation clarified that the measure will not affect older games already on the market. It also excludes titles that launch on disc before the January 2028 cutoff. Despite these exceptions, the news caused concern among video game preservationists and collectors. Critics point out that a digital-only marketplace eliminates the consumer’s ability to trade, lend, or resell used games.
The announcement coincided with another major policy update for older hardware generations. Sony simultaneously confirmed the upcoming closure of the legacy PlayStation Store for the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita consoles. The store closures will roll out in phases across various international regions, ending permanently worldwide by July 2027. Sony explained that older platforms can no longer safely support modern payment processing standards. The company promised that players can still download their previously purchased titles for the foreseeable future. However, the twin announcements underline an industry-wide transition away from physical media ownership.
