The Netherlands donates surplus prison buses to Ukraine

Share

Twenty Dutch prison buses are being given a second life in Ukraine. The country’s prison system is under pressure because of the war with Russia and needs the vehicles to continue operating.

State Secretary Claudia van Bruggen (Justice, D66) handed over the first four buses in the city of Lviv.

“Due to the war, Ukraine is short of almost everything,” Van Bruggen said. “That includes the equipment needed to keep prisons running. By donating prison buses, we are supporting Ukraine in a practical way and helping it to keep society safe, even during wartime.”

Ukraine requested assistance through a European framework after facing a shortage of vehicles for transporting prisoners. The Dutch Correctional Institutions Agency (DJI) still had twenty buses that are technically sound but no longer in use.
