Train services between Rotterdam and the south of the Netherlands have fully resumed after a major power outage disrupted rail traffic for more than a week. At around 4:45 a.m., Dutch Railways (NS) announced that the restrictions had ended. ProRail said normal train operations resumed at about 5:00 a.m.
The disruption began last Monday when a fire in a cable duct near Rotterdam Stadion destroyed around 200 cables. As a result, no trains were able to run between Rotterdam and the south of the country. Repair work faced several delays during the restoration process.
On Monday evening, ProRail was still uncertain whether a technical system in the Willemsspoortunnel could be repaired in time. Engineers continued repair work and testing throughout the night.
“These were successful,” ProRail said. “Train traffic has therefore resumed following days and nights of intensive repair work.”
Some final work will be carried out on the tracks near the platform at Rotterdam Stadion on Tuesday. According to ProRail, this will not affect the timetable.
